Project CreationProject Creation

Create projects correctly so TurfWise sets up the right BOQ path and saves you rework later

5 min read·Updated February 2026·👥 Management

Creating a project is not just filling in a form. The choices you make on this page control which pages open next and how your BOQ, budget, and tasks are structured. Getting this right at the start prevents rework later.

New project form with core fields, delivery type, and bunker planning options

This article refers to a live TurfWise screen. Media is omitted here so the written steps stay current across releases.

What this page does

The New Project page collects all the core information needed to set up a project: name, code, category, priority, risk level, budget, contingency, dates, delivery type, and for bunker projects, the planning mode and course area.

When you save, TurfWise redirects you to the next logical page based on your choices. For bunker renovation projects, this redirect depends on the planning mode you selected.

When would you use this?

  • You're starting a new capital project (bunker renovation, drainage works, construction)
  • You've been asked to set up a project for tracking and budgeting
  • You need to import a contractor BOQ and want the project created first

How to create a project

Open the New Project page

Fill in the core fields first

Set the project name, code, category, priority, and risk level. These are what identify the project across the system.

Set budget and dates

Enter the total budget, contingency amount, start date, and target end date. Be realistic -- these values are used in reporting and forecast calculations.

Choose the delivery type

Select how the work will be executed:

  • In-house -- your team is doing the work
  • Contractor -- an external contractor is doing the work
  • Mixed -- combination of both

For bunker projects, choose the planning mode

If the project type is Bunker Renovation, you'll also choose a bunker planning mode:

  • In-house -- your team is building the BOQ from internal rates
  • Contractor -- you already have a contractor BOQ/tender file to import
  • Both -- you need internal planning plus contractor pricing
  • Unset -- you're not ready to decide yet

Save and follow the redirect

Save the project. TurfWise will redirect you to the appropriate next page based on your choices. Follow the redirect -- don't navigate away.

Why does the planning mode matter?

For bunker renovation projects, the planning mode you choose controls which page opens after you save:

  • In-house redirects to the bunker BOQ builder at /projects/[id]/boq/bunker
  • Contractor redirects to the contractor import page at /projects/[id]/boq/import-contractor
  • Both redirects to the project's BOQ tab at /projects/[id]?tab=budget&sub=boq
  • Unset redirects to the project detail page at /projects/[id]

If you choose the wrong mode, you can still access the correct BOQ tools from the project detail page later. But you'll miss the guided flow that saves time.

Wrong planning mode creates extra steps

If you choose Contractor but then need to build an in-house BOQ, you'll need to navigate to the bunker builder manually. The redirect won't take you there. Getting this right at creation saves confusion.

What does the Course Area field do?

For bunker renovation projects, the Course Area field links the project to mapped bunker geometry on your course. If the correct course area is selected, the in-house bunker builder can load available mapped bunkers and carry area values into BOQ generation.

If no course area is selected or the wrong one is chosen, bunker mapping may be incomplete or unavailable.

What to check before saving

Run through this checklist:

  1. Project code follows your team's naming standard
  2. Budget and contingency are realistic, not placeholder values
  3. Start and target end dates are in the right order and achievable
  4. Delivery type matches how the work will actually be done
  5. If it's a bunker project, course area is set before choosing planning mode

Common problems and fixes

  • Redirect went to the wrong page -- the planning mode you chose determined the redirect. You can still navigate to the correct BOQ page from the project detail view under Budget > BOQ.
  • Budget looks wrong after creation -- edit the project and correct the budget. Go to /projects/[id]/edit.
  • Can't see mapped bunkers -- check that the correct course area was linked during creation.
  • Project code is inconsistent -- agree on a naming standard before creating projects. Changing codes later can cause confusion in reporting.

Good habits that prevent issues later

  • Read through all the fields before filling anything in, so you understand what each one controls
  • Set realistic budget and contingency values. Placeholder numbers create problems in reporting.
  • Choose the delivery type that matches reality. Changing it later doesn't retroactively fix anything.
  • For bunker projects, always set the course area before choosing the planning mode
  • Save once and follow the redirect immediately. Don't save and then wander off to another page.

Where does this data go?

The project you create here appears on the Projects list page. Its budget feeds into Finance. Its timeline feeds into the project Gantt view. The BOQ path you chose determines the initial cost structure. Getting the creation right means everything downstream starts from a solid foundation.
