Bills of Quantities

Build a bunker renovation bill with the Bunker BOQ Builder, import a contractor's priced bill, record progress and track earned value

On this page

A bill of quantities (BOQ) breaks a job down into priced lines — so much sand, so many metres of drainage, so much labour — and lets you track what's been installed against what was priced.

Premium

Bills of quantities are part of the Premium plan's Projects tools.

Do I need a bill of quantities?

Not always. For in-house work, a budget, tasks and costs are usually enough, and the BOQ stays out of your way.

Use a BOQ when:

  • You're renovating bunkers yourself — the Bunker BOQ Builder works out the materials, labour, cost and tasks for you.
  • A contractor has priced the job — import their bill so you can track their work line by line.
  • It's a mix — use both, for example some bunkers in-house and some by a contractor.

You'll find the BOQ under Money › BOQ in the project. If you don't see a BOQ button there, the project is set to Simple — open Settings in the project header and choose Advanced under Workspace tools, or import a bill.

How do I build a bunker bill in-house?

If you chose Use TurfWise bunker calculator (in-house team) when creating the project, the Bunker BOQ Builder opens straight away. You can also reach it from Settings › Edit bunker spec / generate BOQ, or from the BOQ area.

1

Set your specifications and rates

On the Specifications & Rates tab, enter your usual figures: base production rates per m², sand, liner and pipe costs, labour rate, wastage allowances, crew size, hours per day and multipliers for easy, normal and hard bunkers. Give the set a Specification Name so you can reuse it.

2

Work out rates from a real bunker (optional)

Not sure of your production rates? The Reference Bunker Calculator lets you enter what one real bunker took — area, sand, liner, drainage and hours — and click Apply These Rates.

3

Pick the bunkers

Click Next: Select Bunkers. On the Bunker List tab, tick bunkers under Select from Course Map and click Add to BOQ to bring them in with their measured areas — if the project isn't linked to a course area yet, you'll be asked to pick one first. Or click Add Manual Entry and type the sizes in. Set each bunker's Complexity (Easy, Normal or Hard).

4

Choose how to schedule them

Pick a Scheduling Mode — Sequential (one after another), Parallel by Hole (several at once) or Manual (set the dates later on the timeline) — and a Start Date.

5

Generate

Check the Live summary — sand tonnage, liner area, drainage pipe, labour hours, crew days and estimated total cost — then click Generate BOQ & Tasks.

No bunkers on the map?

The builder can only load bunkers you've mapped on your course map. If none appear, use Open Course Geometry Editor to map them, or add them by hand.

Changing your bunker rates later

In the BOQ, click Edit Bunker Rates. Save Spec Only keeps the new rates without touching your bill. Clear & Regenerate deletes the existing bunker BOQ sections — afterwards, go back to the builder and re-add your bunkers so they're priced at the new rates.

How do I import a contractor's bill?

If you chose Upload contractor BOQ / tender when creating the project, the import page opens straight away. You can also reach it from Settings › Import a contractor's bill.

1

Upload the file

Click to upload the file your contractor sent — PDF, Excel (XLS/XLSX) or CSV.

2

Say what kind of file it is (optional)

Under What type of file is this?, pick Contractor BOQ (PDF / valuation), Excel / CSV schedule or Other / not sure. If you're unsure, leave it on Auto detect (recommended).

3

Choose what to do with it

Pick Create a new BOQ, Add items to an existing BOQ or Replace an existing BOQ.

4

Import

Under Confirm & Import, click Import BOQ & Create Tasks. TurfWise reads the lines, quantities, units and rates, creates the BOQ, and generates project tasks from each line. You'll see how many sections, items and tasks were created — click View BOQ & Tasks to see them.

Replacing a bill removes the old one

Replace an existing BOQ removes the existing contractor BOQ lines and the tasks made from them, and it can't be undone. Use it with care.

Importing a consultant's PDF or a CSV

Once the project has a bill, Import/Export in the BOQ area offers two more routes:

  • Import BOQ from PDF — for consultant-style bills, such as those from architects or irrigation consultants. TurfWise reads the PDF and opens the BOQ Import Preview, where you can edit titles, descriptions, quantities and rates, merge or delete lines, and fix the column mapping before saving. Choose whether to Append to existing BOQ or Replace existing BOQ.
  • Import BOQ from CSV (Advanced) — upload sections and items from a spreadsheet using the template provided.

Export Current BOQ downloads your bill as a CSV to open in Excel or Google Sheets.

How do I work with the bill day to day?

Reading the bill

Lines are grouped into sections, with Contract Value, Materials and Installation totals at the top. Switch between Club View, which shows tidied-up descriptions, and Consultant View, which shows them exactly as written in the original bill.

Use Add Section and the item controls to add or edit lines yourself.

Recording progress

Click Record progress on a line. Enter the installed quantity as a cumulative total — the total installed so far, not just today's amount — and add actual start and end dates and notes if you like.

Tick Also record this as a cost to add the matching amount to the project's Costs, dated when the work happened. That way you don't type the same figure twice.

When no cost is added

TurfWise won't guess. If a line has no price or no contract quantity, or you've corrected a figure downwards, no cost is created and you're told why.

Earned value and the BOQ timeline

The BOQ area includes an Earned Value Management Dashboard. It compares what the bill says has been installed with what you've spent and what should have been done by now, using measures such as Planned Value, Earned Value, Actual Cost, Cost Performance Index (CPI) and Schedule Performance Index (SPI), plus a projected final cost.

You can also open a Project Timeline (Gantt Chart) of the BOQ items, showing progress on each line.
