Overtime & TOIL
See how many TOIL hours each person has banked, who is on TOIL and who is on paid overtime
On this page
The Overtime & TOIL tab on Attendance & Leave shows how much time off in lieu (TOIL) your team has banked, so you can see who is owed time before it builds up.

What do the four figures mean?
- TOIL banked — the total TOIL hours the whole team has in the bank right now
- On TOIL — how many people have their overtime set to TOIL
- Paid overtime — how many people are paid for overtime instead
- With balance — how many people have at least some TOIL banked
These are current balances, not figures for a date range.
How do I read the TOIL balances list?
Everyone on the team gets a row, with the most hours banked at the top. Each row shows:
- The person's name — click it to open their profile
- TOIL, Paid or — — how their overtime is set up. A dash means it hasn't been set.
- A bar — their balance compared with whoever has the most banked
- Hours banked — and, for people on TOIL, their accrual rate, such as 1.5× accrual
The accrual rate is how many hours go in the bank for each hour of overtime worked.
Long bars are a nudge
Someone near the top of the list with a big balance is owed a fair bit of time. It's worth agreeing when they'll take it before the hours pile up.
Where does the balance come from?
Each person's balance goes up when overtime is banked as TOIL, and comes down when they take TOIL as time off.
This page is a summary only. The detail lives on each person's profile, on their Overtime & TOIL tab — the full TOIL ledger, their overtime tasks and their TOIL requests.
How do I change someone between TOIL and paid overtime?
Open their profile, click Edit profile and use Overtime configuration. Choose Paid overtime or TOIL (time off in lieu). For TOIL, pick a TOIL accrual rate — the form shows what it means, for example 2 hours of overtime at 1.5x banks 3 hours of TOIL.
How is TOIL taken?
TOIL is booked as time off — either by the person from the mobile app, or by a manager with Add absence and the TOIL type. A request only counts as time off once it's approved; until then it's awaiting approval. See Absences and leave.
