COSHH

Keep COSHH assessments for every hazardous product, fill them from the safety data sheet, classify new stock, and stay on top of reviews

On this page

COSHH is where you keep an assessment for every hazardous substance on site — what's in it, the hazards, who's exposed, the controls and PPE, and what to do in an emergency.

Premium

COSHH is part of Premium, along with the rest of H & S.

Where is the COSHH register?

Click H & S in the top bar, then Assessments, then COSHH. The page is called COSHH assessments. Four tabs sit at the top: Assessments, What you spray, To classify and Review dates. Assessments shows Total assessments, Active, Under review and Expired.

Search by substance, supplier or reference, and filter by status or by exposure level (Low, Medium or High). Each row shows the substance, reference, supplier, exposure, Review due date and status. Anything without a safety data sheet is flagged No MSDS.

The Export as PDF button on each row gives you a printable copy of that assessment — useful for the chemical store or an inspector.

How do I add a COSHH assessment?

Click New COSHH. The quickest way is to start from the product's safety data sheet.

1

Upload the MSDS PDF

Drop the Material Safety Data Sheet into Upload MSDS PDF (PDF only, up to 20MB). TurfWise reads it and fills in as much of the form as it can, then suggests hazard categories, controls and PPE for you to accept or dismiss. See Fill a COSHH assessment from the safety data sheet for how the reading and suggestions work.

2

Check what was filled in

A banner tells you the details below were AI-extracted. Go through each field and correct anything that's wrong. If the sheet can't be read, the PDF is still saved and you can fill the form in by hand.

3

Substance Details

Make sure the Substance Name, Supplier and COSHH Reference are right. Add the MAPP Number for plant protection products, and set the Status, Assessment Date and Review Date.

4

Composition and hazards

List the ingredients with their CAS numbers and concentrations, and tick the Hazard Categories that apply.

5

Exposure & Risk

Set the Exposure Frequency (Low, Medium or High) and Exposure Duration (Short Term, Medium Term or Long Term), and say who's at risk.

6

Controls, PPE and emergencies

Add the PPE Required, the Control Measures and the Emergency Procedures for exposure or spillage.

7

Save

Enter the Assessor (and a supervisor and department if you like), then click Save Assessment.

The sheet is read by AI — always check it

Auto-filling saves a lot of typing, but you're signing off the assessment. Check hazards, PPE and emergency procedures against the safety data sheet before you save.

How do I update an assessment?

Open it from the register. You'll see its status, hazards and whether an MSDS is on file, followed by the full detail. Click Edit to change it, Export PDF for a printable copy, or Delete to remove it (you'll be asked to confirm).

When you change an assessment, anyone who had already confirmed reading it in the mobile app will be asked to confirm it again.

What is the What you spray tab?

What you spray lists every product sprayed in the last 12 months and shows whether it has a COSHH answer. Products with no answer are counted so you can see the gaps: COSHH required, Pesticides, not classified and Other, not classified.

From a row you can classify the product, link an existing assessment, or write a new one with the product's details already filled in.

What is the To classify tab?

When new products arrive in your stock, TurfWise sorts most of them by their category. Anything it cannot decide on appears in COSHH > To classify (the COSHH inbox) for someone to classify. Existing inbox links open this tab.

For each product you'll see its category and supplier, with two buttons:

  • Needs COSHH — this product needs a COSHH assessment
  • Not needed — it doesn't (sand, seed and so on)

Work through the inbox regularly, so nothing hazardous sits in the shed without an assessment.

What about bio-stimulants?

Whether bio-stimulants count as needing a COSHH assessment is a club policy. Set it in Settings > Knowledge & policies > H&S policy (open Settings from your initial at the right of the top bar) with Require a COSHH assessment for bio-stimulants.

How do I stay on top of reviews?

Open the Review dates tab. The page is called Review & coverage and shows:

  • Active, Expired, Due for review and No safety data sheet
  • Expiry alerts (next 30 days) — assessments coming up for review, with days remaining
  • Recommendations — what to tackle to improve your coverage
  • an Upcoming review schedule split into the next 30, 60 and 90 days

Once an assessment passes its review date, TurfWise marks it Expired automatically. You can also do this straight away with Auto-Expire.

Review before the date, not after

An expired assessment can appear as a recorded review gap in the H & S overview. Use the source record to review the assessment and its actual work context; an in-date document alone does not establish complete coverage.

How does the team see COSHH on their phones?

Every assessment that's Active or Under review is available in the TurfWise mobile app. Staff can read the hazards, PPE and emergency procedures, and confirm they've read each one. Track who's confirmed what under H & S > Team > Read & signed — see Read & signed.
